New Book Details Historic Highway Construction
A new book is out detailing the construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway. Peg Willis is the author of “Building the Columbia River Highway: They Said It Couldn’t Be Done.” Willis says she used to travel the highway with her family, and wanted to learn more about it, how it came to be, and the people behind it. One of those people was a polio survivor named Samuel Lancaster, who designed the highway. Willis calls him “the heart and soul” of the highway. The book is published by the History Press, with information available on-line at historypress.net. Willis will appear at the History Museum of Hood River County Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m.
